Scientific meeting: distal impacts of major volcanic eruptions on pre-industrial societies in the Mediterranean

The Avellino Event Project studies the geoarchaeological evidence for a northward migration brought about by the Early Bronze Age ‘Avellino’ eruption of the Vesuvius.

The aim of this scientific meeting is to bring together a group of international experts, complementing and amplifying the expertise of the project team itself, to present, discuss, and publish a review of the state of research into the diverse distal impacts of volcanic eruptions on pre-industrial sedentary societies in the Mediterranean.

The meeting will have two immediate benefits to the project team: first, it will bring the team up to date with the latest thinking regarding all types of distal impacts that might be relevant to its research; and second, it will allow the team to receive timely expert comment and advice including practical pointers on its work plan and timetable. More broadly, the meeting may spark new international collaborations. The field of volcanic impact studies will benefit from the publication, some 15 years after Torrence’s and Grattan’s (2002) Natural Disasters and Cultural Change, of the proceedings.

The meeting will take place on 5-7 June 2016, and is hosted by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology at the old Royal Vesuvius Observatory. Participants will be accommodated at the nearby 4 star Hotel Marad.

A half-day excursion will be organized on the afternoon of Sunday 5th of June to visit places relevant to the Avellino Event, such as the Nola museum.

All speakers will be expected to provide a 4-page extended abstract in English of their presentations, a booklet of which will be pre-circulated. Sessions will be about 3 hours in length, with four 30 minute lecture slots and a 1 hour panel discussion per theme.

Invited discussants will reflect on the presentations to lead off the discussion following each session.

Organizing committee: Mauro Antonio Di Vito (hosting), Peter Attema, Martijn van Leusen, Sonja Filatova (Avellino project team)
